About this position

This fully funded PhD opportunity at Monash University Malaysia focuses on advancing sustainable agriculture through innovative hydroponic techniques. The project, titled "Biosurfactant-Integrated Microbubble Aeration for Oxygen Delivery and Enhanced Biostimulation of Ocimum basilicum L.," aims to address the challenges of root health and growth stimulation in soil-less cultivation systems, particularly for sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum L.).

With the global population expected to reach 10 billion by 2050, sustainable food production is critical. Hydroponics offers a promising solution for urban agriculture, but optimizing oxygen delivery and nutrient uptake remains a key challenge. This research investigates the synergistic effects of microbubble aeration and biosurfactants to enhance plant growth and productivity in hydroponic systems.

The project is supervised by Associate Professor Ee Von Lau and Dr. Joash Tan from the School of Engineering and Information Technology. Candidates will join a multidisciplinary research environment, leveraging expertise in agricultural technology, plant biology, chemical engineering, and mechanical engineering.

Funding: The position is supported by the Graduate Research Excellence Scholarship, which provides a 100% tuition fee waiver and a competitive monthly stipend of RM 2,850.

Eligibility: Applicants must hold a First Class Honours (H1) Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Engineering or a related discipline, recognized by Monash University Malaysia. Familiarity with experimental design and demonstrated research experience (e.g., publications, fellowships) are advantageous. English language requirements must be met.

Application Process: Interested candidates should first contact the main supervisor with their academic background and achievements to assess suitability. If a good fit, complete the Expression of Interest form with a research proposal relevant to the project. Eligible applicants will be invited to apply for PhD candidature and may be selected for a scholarship interview, likely in February 2026. Applications are open until filled.

This is an excellent opportunity for motivated graduates to contribute to sustainable agriculture and urban food production through cutting-edge research in hydroponics and plant science.
