Research Ireland Pathway Fellowship

Maynooth University’s Department of Physics is advertising a fully funded PhD scholarship in condensed matter theory and quantum computing / quantum information science, with research directions including quantum simulation complexity, many-body fermions, topological phases of matter, measurement-induced dynamics, and strongly correlated fermions.

The position is associated with the Research Ireland Pathway Fellowship and is supervised by Dr. Joshuah Heath in the new Heathens Group at Maynooth University. The broader department also highlights collaboration opportunities with Prof. Joost Slingerland, Prof. Jiri Vala, and Dr. Graham Kells, plus access to computational resources including a high-performance GPU server.

Funding: €25,000 per year for four years, annual tuition fee support, and additional support for equipment, travel, conference registration, training, and summer schools. The award runs from September 1, 2026 to August 2030.

Eligibility: a relevant first-class or 2.1 honours degree (or equivalent), or a Master’s degree in physics by September 2026. Python, Julia, and/or C/C++ experience is desired, and applicants must meet Maynooth University’s minimum English language requirements. The student must be resident in Ireland and study full-time at Maynooth University.
