About this position

Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) invites applications for a fully funded PhD position in Medical Image Analysis and Artificial Intelligence. This opportunity is part of the ELEVATE project, focusing on next-generation generative AI for healthcare. The research aims to transform 2D scans, such as X-rays, into 3D/4D anatomical models, with a particular emphasis on musculoskeletal imaging of the lower limbs. The project involves developing advanced AI models, including GANs, diffusion models, and autoencoders, and collaborating closely with clinicians at UZ Brussel.

As a PhD student, you will design and train AI models, work with real clinical imaging data, and collaborate across academia and industry. You will also contribute to teaching and academic activities. The position offers the chance to work with IMEC, a world-leading tech research center, and to make a real-world clinical impact through strong international collaborations.

Applicants should have a Master’s degree in Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, Electronics, AI, or Data Science, with strong skills in Python, machine learning, and deep learning. Experience with medical imaging, PyTorch, MONAI, GPU/HPC computing, and imaging tools such as ITK or nibabel is advantageous.

The scholarship is fully funded for up to 4 years and includes flexible work and remote options, approximately 35 days of leave plus holidays, free or covered transport, health insurance, affordable campus meals, and sports and lifestyle benefits. The start date is between June and September 2026, and the application deadline is 19 April 2026.

To apply, submit your CV, motivation letter, and diploma via the VUB portal. For more information, visit the official job posting or contact the announcer via LinkedIn.
