About this position

The University of Antwerp is offering a doctoral scholarship for research in Resource-Aware AI for Next-Generation Networks within the Department of Electronics and Information and Communication Technologies (Faculty of Applied Engineering). This PhD opportunity focuses on designing computationally efficient, scalable, and adaptive AI models for radio access, edge, and non-terrestrial network environments. Candidates may focus on radio/physical-layer intelligence (such as channel estimation, CSI prediction, edge-deployable deep learning) or networking/control-plane intelligence (including reinforcement learning for scheduling, congestion control, link adaptation, and cross-layer optimization). The research aligns with the IDLab Flexible and Deterministic Networking group.

Applicants should hold or expect to obtain a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Telecommunications, Computer Science, or a related field, preferably with distinction. Essential skills include a strong foundation in machine learning or deep learning (with experience in PyTorch or TensorFlow), programming proficiency in Python, and preferably C/C++ or MATLAB. A background in wireless communications, signal processing, or networking is preferred, as is familiarity with softwarized network stacks (OAI, srsRAN, FlexRIC), edge computing, Docker/Kubernetes, and experimental testbeds. Analytical and independent research skills, a research-oriented mindset, and excellent English proficiency are required.

The scholarship is initially for one year, renewable annually up to four years based on performance. The package includes a monthly stipend (per university policy), eco vouchers, internet connectivity allowance, bicycle allowance or public transport reimbursement, and access to courses and educational credits via the Antwerp Doctoral School. The research environment is collaborative and stimulating, with work locations at City Campus (The Beacon) and Campus Groenenborger.

To apply, candidates must submit a motivation letter, academic CV with transcript, two reference letters, an English proficiency certificate, and a short research proposal (max 4 pages) aligned with their interests and the research focus. The application deadline is April 23, 2026. For research-related questions, contact Miguel Camelo, Dr. Nina Slamnik-Kriještorac, or Prof. Johann Marquez-Barja. For application process queries, contact [email protected].

This position is ideal for candidates interested in AI, machine learning, wireless communications, edge computing, and networking, aiming to contribute to the advancement of next-generation communication systems in a leading European research environment.

Funding details

Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
