University of Antwerp doctoral scholarship

University of Antwerp is advertising doctoral scholarship holder positions in the Department of Electromechanical Engineering, with research centered on thermal energy system optimization and power electronics thermal management.

The first PhD topic focuses on the integration of high-temperature heat pumps in industrial chemical batch processes. The project aims to develop a design and optimization methodology for the integration architecture, component sizing, and control strategy, considering transient heating and cooling demands. The work is linked to collaboration with Ghent University and KU Leuven and is embedded in the EMIB research group.

The second PhD topic addresses direct oil cooling of power electronics, combining electrical, thermal, and mechanical aspects through both simulation and experimental work. This project is carried out in the EMIB and Cosys-Lab research groups under the supervision of prof. Ilya T’Jollyn and prof. Ben Minnaert.

Eligibility highlights: a master degree in Electromechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a similar field; excellent study results; and strong English skills (or English/Dutch for the power electronics project). Experience with thermal system modelling or CFD/numerical simulation is considered an advantage.

Funding: both are doctoral scholarship positions, initially for one year and renewable up to four years in total, with standard doctoral scholarship pay and commuting-related benefits.
