About this position
The Australian Catholic University (ACU) invites applications for a full-time PhD scholarship focused on the investigation of how children learn to read and spell irregular words—those that do not follow standard phonics pronunciation rules. This research opportunity is based at the North Sydney campus and is offered for up to 3.5 years, providing a unique chance to contribute to the advancement of literacy education in Australia.
The successful candidate will join the Australian Centre for the Advancement of Literacy, a leading research hub established in 2023 within ACU's Faculty of Education and Arts. The Centre is renowned for its world-class research on reading acquisition and its commitment to translating findings into effective teaching practices. The research team collaborates with schools across the education sector, ensuring that teachers benefit from evidence-informed professional learning and co-designed classroom interventions.
Under the supervision of Dr Signy Wegener, recipient of an Australian Research Council-funded DECRA Fellowship, the PhD student will conduct experimental training studies in primary school settings. The project aims to generate new insights into the teaching of irregular word reading and spelling, ultimately informing educational policy and classroom practice across Australia.
The scholarship package includes a tax-free stipend of A$34,315 per annum (indexed) for up to 3.5 years, full tuition fee coverage valued at approximately A$34,728 per annum, comprehensive health insurance for international candidates, and up to A$2,000 relocation allowance. These benefits ensure financial stability and support throughout your research journey.
Eligibility is open to both domestic and international applicants. Candidates should hold qualifications in a discipline related to reading, such as Cognitive Science, Psychology, or Education, and demonstrate a strong interest in reading acquisition during primary school. Experience with quantitative research methods, experimental research, and working with children in research, educational, or clinical settings is highly desirable. Applicants must either hold or be willing to obtain a current Working with Children Check. The ability to work independently and collaboratively is essential, and experience with data collection and statistical analysis is advantageous.
Applications are accepted year-round until the position is awarded. Interested candidates are encouraged to contact Dr Signy Wegener ([email protected]) to express their interest and discuss the project in detail before submitting a formal application. To apply, submit all required documentation for the PhD program at ACU, including a CV and cover letter detailing your relevant experience and interest in the project. When completing the application form, indicate that you are applying for the stipend scholarship and include the project name "How do children learn to read and spell irregular words?"
This PhD position offers an exceptional opportunity to join a vibrant research community dedicated to improving literacy outcomes for children. You will benefit from interdisciplinary inquiry, access to high-calibre researchers, and the chance to make a meaningful impact on educational practice and policy.
