About this position
The University of Antwerp, in collaboration with the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), invites applications for two full-time doctoral scholarship positions as part of the research project “Humanising the Hospital.” This interdisciplinary project is led by Professors Margo Annemans (UAntwerp), Veronique Boone (ULB), and Bart Tritsmans (UAntwerp), and is based within the research groups “Architecture + Interior” at the Faculty of Design Sciences (UAntwerp) and “hortence” at the Faculty of Architecture (ULB).
The project investigates the evolution and contemporary relevance of human-centred design principles in Belgian hospital buildings constructed between the 1960s and 1980s. It aims to bridge the gap between historical architectural and interior discourses and the lived experiences of patients, visitors, and staff in these spaces today. By employing methodologies from architecture history, cultural and political history, and anthropology, the research will illuminate the ideological and practical shifts in hospital design and assess their impact on modern healthcare environments.
Successful candidates will prepare and defend a PhD thesis in Interior Architecture, Architecture, and Urbanism, focusing on the interplay between past and present hospital design. The positions are based at both campus Mutsaard (Antwerp) and campus Flagey (Brussels), offering a dynamic, cross-institutional research environment. Supervision is provided by Professors Annemans, Boone, and Tritsmans, with additional guidance from a postdoctoral researcher and a committee of experts. The roles include publishing in peer-reviewed journals, participating in international conferences, engaging in research group activities, and undertaking limited teaching and research support tasks.
Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in interior architecture, architecture, engineering-architecture, history, anthropology, or a related discipline. A combination of these degrees is advantageous. Proficiency in English and either French or Dutch is required for field research. Candidates should demonstrate excellent academic performance, strong interest in the research topic, effective writing skills, and relevant methodological expertise. The ability to work independently and collaboratively, as well as alignment with the research and teaching policies of both institutions, is essential.
The scholarship is offered for an initial two-year period, renewable for another two years following a positive evaluation, covering the full four-year doctoral trajectory (2026–2029). The monthly stipend is determined by the pay scales for Contract Research Staff. Additional benefits include a bicycle allowance or full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting. The positions provide access to research training and guidance from both partner institutions, fostering a stimulating and inclusive academic environment in Antwerp and Brussels.
Applications must be submitted online via the University of Antwerp’s job application platform by May 4, 2026. Required documents include a motivation letter (in English, Dutch, or French), academic CV (with publication list if relevant), names and emails of two referees, and any relevant annexes (publications, awards, dissertations, projects, etc.). Shortlisted candidates may be invited for interviews on May 28, 2026. For questions regarding the application process, contact [email protected]; for job-specific inquiries, contact Professors Margo Annemans or Veronique Boone.
The University of Antwerp and ULB are committed to diversity, equal opportunities, and an inclusive working environment. Reasonable accommodations are available for candidates with disabilities, disorders, or illnesses. For more information on diversity policies, visit ULB Diversity.
