About this position

The Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) invites applications for a PhD scholarship in Applied Physics, Neuromorphic Photonics, and Ising machines, funded by the Belgian FWO project “Integrated Photonic Ising Machines.” This position is based in the Faculty of Sciences and Bioengineering Sciences, Department of Physics, and offers a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of physics, electronics, and photonics.

The research focuses on developing novel optical computing devices—Ising machines—that efficiently solve complex combinatorial problems in fields such as logistics, finance, and pharmaceutical research. These analog hardware accelerators leverage photonic integrated circuits to achieve high-speed, energy-efficient computation, surpassing traditional digital computers. The project is experimental, numerical, and theoretical, and involves close collaboration between VUB and Ghent University (UGENT), with a cotutelle arrangement ensuring joint supervision and exposure to both institutions.

As a PhD student, you will design photonic integrated circuits for Ising machines, participate in hands-on workshops, attend international conferences, and engage in outreach activities. The position offers a full-time scholarship for 12 months, extendable up to 48 months based on performance, with a grant linked to government scales. Additional benefits include telework allowance, cost-free hospitalisation insurance, full reimbursement of public transport commute, affordable campus meals, sports facilities, nursery discounts, and extensive leave arrangements.

Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in physics or engineering sciences or equivalent, and must not have worked as an assistant paid from operating resources for more than 12 months. Non-EEA nationals must meet permit and residence requirements. VUB values diversity and encourages applications from all backgrounds.

The application deadline is 31 July 2026. To apply, submit your CV, motivation letter, and diploma (not required for VUB alumni) via the online portal. The selection process includes an initial review and a job interview. For further information about the position, contact Dr. Guy Van Der Sande at [email protected].
