About this position
Dr Mia Martin Hobbs at Deakin University is seeking a PhD candidate for her DECRA project titled ‘Race, Gender, and Violence in Western militaries in the War on Terror’. This research opportunity is based at the Burwood Campus in Melbourne and offers a unique chance to explore the intersection of diversity, military doctrine, and the lived experiences of soldiers and civilians during the War on Terror. The project investigates how Western militaries, particularly those of the US, UK, and Australia, promoted diversity as a core element of their strategy post-9/11, while simultaneously weaponising race and gender within their institutions. The successful candidate will conduct independent research on a related topic, with possible areas including oral histories with women and minority veterans from other Western militaries, civilian experiences in war theatres, perceptions of race and gender in the Australian Defence Force, transnational analyses of the War on Terror, histories of terror groups, or the history of specific war theatres.
The PhD position is fully funded with a tax-free scholarship of $37,450 per annum for three years. The candidate will work closely with Dr Martin Hobbs, coauthoring research outputs and contributing to oral history projects. The role requires the development of an original research proposal, engagement in independent and collaborative research, and the production of high-quality academic outputs such as conference papers, journal articles, and a dissertation.
Applicants must meet Deakin’s PhD entry requirements, enroll full time, and hold an Honours degree (First Class) or an equivalent standard Master’s degree with a substantial research component. A background in History or a related discipline is essential. The application process involves submitting a cover letter, a 2-3 page research proposal outlining the project idea, originality, sources, and relevant expertise, a CV, university transcripts, and evidence of written and research capability (such as publications or a master’s thesis). Applications should be sent to Dr Mia Martin Hobbs at [email protected] by 31st May 2026. The position is advertised as part of Deakin University’s commitment to flexible learning, diversity, and global impact, with a strong reputation for student satisfaction and research excellence.
This opportunity is ideal for motivated and enthusiastic candidates interested in the social, cultural, and political dimensions of military history, diversity, and the War on Terror. The research environment at Deakin University offers access to a diverse team of professionals, state-of-the-art digital tools, and a supportive academic community. The scholarship provides financial security and the chance to contribute to impactful research with global relevance.
