About this position

Monash University PhD Scholarship: Hitting the limits – Intersectional sexisms in Australian universities

This is a fully funded 3.5-year PhD scholarship at Monash University (Faculty of Education, School of Education and Culture, Clayton campus, Melbourne, Australia) linked to an Australian Research Council-funded project on intersectional sexisms in Australian universities.

The project examines LGBTIQA+ academics’ institutional locations, workplace experiences, and private/professional support mechanisms within Australian universities. The scholarship is supervised by Associate Professor Emily M. Gray (principal supervisor), Professor Jacqueline Ullman (Western Sydney University), and Associate Professor Lucy Nicholas (Western Sydney University).

Applicants are encouraged to develop their own research project in relation to questions about where LGBTIQA+ academics are located across disciplines and geography, whether they feel welcome in their workplaces, and what support strategies they use in private and professional life. The project sits at the intersection of education, sociology, gender studies, queer theory, feminist theory, and research on intersectionality, power, and institutional culture.

Eligibility highlights: domestic candidates only; must have a research masters or honours year (or equivalent) to meet PhD entry requirements; must enrol full time and on campus; must not already hold a PhD. The selection committee will prioritise applicants with strong knowledge of feminist and queer theories and LGBTIQA+ communities. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and LGBTIQA+ people are encouraged to apply.

Funding: fully funded scholarship with remuneration listed as $37,145 per annum.

Application window: applications close 30 June 2026, 11:55pm AEST. Successful applicants are expected to enrol by August 2026, with some flexibility on commencement.

How to apply: prepare a brief 3–4 page research proposal aligned with the project and submit an Expression of Interest through the provided link. For enquiries, contact the Faculty of Education Graduate Research Office at [email protected].
