About this position

Sheffield Hallam University invites applications for a fully funded PhD scholarship in the School of Sport and Physical Activity, commencing 01 October 2026. The project, 'Predicting Medal‑Winning Times in Paralympic Sport,' offers an exciting opportunity to advance sport analytics and performance prediction, directly impacting medal success at future Paralympic Games. The scholarship covers Home PhD fees and provides a stipend at the Living Wage Foundation rate (£22,152 for 2025/26, increasing annually). International and EU applicants are welcome, but must cover the fee gap (£13,362/year) as the bursary only covers Home fees.

As a doctoral researcher, you will join a vibrant community of around 65 PhD students, supported by a comprehensive training programme and based within the Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre (AWRC), a world-leading hub for health innovation. The project is delivered in collaboration with Aquatics GB and British Cycling, leveraging unique, real-world datasets to develop and evaluate predictive models for medal-winning performances across Paralympic sport. You will work closely with National Governing Bodies to ensure research is both practically meaningful and methodologically rigorous.

The PhD aims to critically review existing prediction approaches in Olympic and Paralympic sport, develop frameworks for defining prediction accuracy, build and evaluate models tailored to Paralympic data, and explain how data characteristics influence model performance. Embedded within the renowned Sports Engineering Research Group, you will contribute to academic and applied sports analytics projects, broadening your technical expertise and professional network.

Applicants should hold (or expect to obtain) a 1st class or high 2:1 degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Data Science, Computer Science, Engineering, Sport Science, or a closely related discipline. Strong quantitative skills are essential, including experience with data analysis, statistical modelling, or programming (Python, R, MATLAB). Additional specialist training will be provided. International applicants must meet the English language requirement (IELTS 7, minimum 6.5 in all areas, taken within the last two years) unless exempt, and confirm ability to pay the tuition fee gap.

To apply, complete the online application form and add the project title in the Personal Statement field. Upload a 1,500-word research proposal addressing this specific project, two academic references, degree certificate, and passport. International applicants must also submit IELTS results and a statement confirming ability to pay the tuition fee gap. The application deadline is 17 June 2026, 12 noon UK Time. Interviews will be held the week commencing 06 July 2026. For informal discussions, contact Dr Andy Hext ([email protected]).
