Embark on a cutting-edge PhD research project at Loughborough University, focusing on the development of smart wearables and textiles for sensing and communication in sports and rehabilitation. This studentship is based within the renowned Sports Technology Institute, which collaborates with leading global brands and sports federations such as Adidas, Nike, FIFA, and Speedo. The project aims to design, manufacture, and integrate intelligent textile and wearable systems capable of advanced sensing, communication, and stimulation, with applications in high-performance sports (e.g., running) and rehabilitation (e.g., recovery monitoring).

As a PhD student, you will work on multidisciplinary research combining advanced materials, electronics, textile engineering, and sports biomechanics. The research will involve prototyping soft, conformable e-textiles and wearable devices, considering environmental impact, ergonomic design, and practical testing with athletes or patients. You will benefit from an internationally collaborative environment, engaging with global partners from academia and industry.

The Sports Technology Institute at Loughborough University is ranked 1st in the world for sports-related subjects (QS World University Rankings by Subject, 2017-2024). The Institute provides a vibrant, multi-disciplinary team and offers £500 per year for PhD students to support conference attendance and consumables.

This studentship is funded through the China Scholarship Council (CSC) and is open exclusively to Chinese nationals. Successful candidates will receive a full tuition fee scholarship, awarded competitively to those nominated by Loughborough University and approved by the CSC-Loughborough scheme. Applicants should hold a very good undergraduate degree (UK 2:1 honors or international equivalent) and meet minimum English language requirements. Candidates with backgrounds in wearable electronics, smart textiles, textile engineering, polymer science, or related fields are encouraged to apply. Experience in advanced manufacturing, knitting technologies, or functional fibres is advantageous.
