About this position

The President’s PhD Scholarships at Imperial College London offer an outstanding opportunity for high-performing undergraduate or Master’s students to pursue a fully funded PhD at a world-class research institution. The scholarship is open to candidates from Imperial College London, the UK, and worldwide, with no restrictions on nationality. Fifty scholarships are available, each providing full tuition coverage, a generous annual stipend of £26,500 (2026-27 rate), and a consumables fund of £2,000 per annum for the first three years. Scholars also benefit from bespoke opportunities and events delivered by the Early Career Researcher Institute, as well as tailored support for disabled and international students.

Applicants must demonstrate excellent academic performance and promising research potential. Eligibility requires a first class or equivalent undergraduate or integrated Master’s degree, or a distinction in a standalone Master’s qualification. Candidates with non-traditional academic or career pathways who show strong research potential are encouraged to apply. The scheme is only open to new PhD applications; current Imperial PhD students are not eligible.

Before applying, candidates must contact a supervisor in an academic department at Imperial College London and secure their agreement to supervise the research project. Supervisors are limited to one scholar at a time. The application process involves submitting an online PhD admission application, including a two-page personal statement and research proposal. Candidates must select the President’s PhD Scholarship option in the funding section of the application form. Applications are reviewed by departments and a College Selection Panel, with final decisions based on academic excellence and research potential.

The scholarship covers a wide range of research areas, including Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Medical Science, Environmental Science, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Materials Science. The earliest start date for funded places is 1 August 2026, and the latest is 1 November 2026. The application deadline is 2 March 2026.

For more information and to apply, visit the official Imperial College London admissions portal and review the President’s PhD Scholarships guidance. This is a competitive scheme designed to attract the best local, national, and global talent, supporting diversity and excellence in research.
