The University of California Dissertation-Year Fellowship is now open for doctoral candidates in academic PhD programs who are entering the final year of dissertation writing. This prestigious fellowship is designed to support students as they complete their dissertations, providing the time, stability, and intellectual focus necessary for a successful conclusion to their doctoral studies. The fellowship is inclusive, welcoming applications from U.S. citizens, permanent residents, undocumented students (AB540), non-AB540 students with DACA, and those with work authorization. Professional program students are not eligible.

Fellows will receive a $32,000 stipend, payment of in-state fees, and an $8,000 bonus for early dissertation filing, ensuring financial support throughout the dissertation year. The program aims to foster academic excellence and diversity, recognizing students who have demonstrated a commitment to teaching, research, and serving underrepresented or disadvantaged populations. Applicants must have advanced to doctoral candidacy, completed at least two dissertation chapters or the equivalent, and be making adequate progress toward their degree, as confirmed by their dissertation chair.

Selection criteria include the originality and rigor of the dissertation project, evidence of the ability to complete the dissertation within the fellowship year, and a demonstrated commitment to advancing equitable access to higher education. The fellowship also values research interests that address cultural, societal, or educational challenges, particularly those affecting underserved communities and issues of racial or gender inequality in the U.S. context.

Fellows are required to present two seminars on their dissertation research—one at UC Berkeley and one at another California university—and are encouraged to participate in academic conferences and university events. They must also attend dissertation completion workshops and check-in sessions with the Graduate Division or Office for Graduate Diversity. Employment during the fellowship is restricted to certain university appointments at no more than 25% time per semester.

The application process is twofold: first, students must be nominated by their academic department, which involves a letter of support from the Department Chair and a letter from the Dissertation Chair. Once nominated, students will receive an invitation to submit an online application, which must include a personal statement, a non-technical summary of the dissertation, a detailed outline, and unofficial transcripts. The deadline for applications is March 2, 2026.
