About this position

The University of Graz is seeking a University Assistant with a doctorate (postdoctoral researcher) to join the Department of Geography and Regional Sciences, specifically the CC-MoRe working group. The group focuses on advancing process understanding of the ice/atmosphere nexus in the context of climate change, with a strong emphasis on areas near the ice margin and peripheral glaciers in Greenland. Research activities combine innovative in-situ monitoring, remote sensing, and modelling approaches across scales, anchored by the recently expanded Sermilik research station in East Greenland.

The successful candidate will conduct independent research and publication activities, develop research projects within the CC-MoRe group, and focus on glacier-atmosphere interactions and atmospheric boundary layer processes in Greenland and high mountain regions. Responsibilities include meteorological and glaciological data acquisition and modelling using autonomous methods (such as UAVs equipped with meteorological sensors), organizing and implementing fieldwork in remote Arctic regions, participating in third-party funding applications, teaching, conducting examinations, and (co-)supervising students. Collaboration on organizational and administrative tasks is also expected.

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in geography, meteorology, geophysics, or a related field. Essential qualifications include excellent English communication skills, strong programming abilities (Python, R), proficiency in statistics and remote sensing, technical understanding and interest in field measurements, and enthusiasm for scientific work and student engagement. Teaching experience and fieldwork in Arctic environments are advantageous. Candidates should demonstrate creativity, independence, and an output-oriented approach, as well as the ability to work in interdisciplinary teams.

The position offers an annual gross salary of at least €70,200.20 for full-time employment, with the possibility of overpayment based on qualifications and experience. Standard university benefits, including access to healthcare services and flexible working models, are provided. The contract is temporary for up to 6 years, with employment starting as soon as possible.

The University of Graz values diversity and inclusion, actively encourages qualified women and persons with disabilities to apply, and prioritizes women in cases of underrepresentation. The university fosters interdisciplinary collaboration and offers a vibrant internal continuing education program.

To apply, candidates must submit a single PDF containing a CV, two references, and a short (maximum 2 pages) research exposé via the university's web-based applicant tool. For further information, contact Assoz.Prof.Dr. Jakob Abermann at [email protected]. The application deadline is April 22, 2026.

Join a dynamic research environment at the University of Graz and contribute to impactful climate science in Arctic and high mountain regions.
