PhD Position in Computer Science: Data Mining, Machine Learning, and Bioinformatics (Fully Funded, University of Southern Denmark)
The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science (IMADA) at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU), Campus Odense, is offering a fully funded PhD position in Computer Science, supported by the Novo Nordisk Foundation. The successful candidate will join the Data Science & Statistics section and work under the primary supervision of Professor Ricardo J. G. B. Campello. The project is a collaborative effort with the Institute for Computational Genomics at RWTH Aachen University, Germany, and may include research visits to Aachen.
This PhD project focuses on advancing research in data mining and machine learning, with direct applications in computational biology and bioinformatics. Key research areas include developing specialized algorithms for high-dimensional datasets, creating methods for automatic or visually aided model selection, integrating domain knowledge into algorithms, and performing extensive experimental benchmarking. The candidate will also develop software tools compatible with popular data analysis packages for public distribution.
Eligibility requires a relevant Master’s degree (or imminent completion) in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Data Science, Computational Statistics, Bioinformatics, Computer Engineering, or a related field. Applicants must demonstrate advanced programming skills and fluency in English. Desirable qualifications include proficiency in Python, experience in algorithm design, machine learning, data analysis, and biological data analysis. MSc candidates nearing completion should provide a supervisor’s statement regarding graduation.
