PhD Position: Leadership Development in Older Persons Care

This PhD position focuses on leadership development in older persons care and is a joint doctoral project between the Academic Centre for Nursing and Midwifery (AccentVV) at KU Leuven and the Care and Ethics research group at Hasselt University (UHasselt). The successful candidate will conduct research aimed at understanding and strengthening leadership within residential care settings for older adults. The project is supervised by Professor Dr. Mieke Deschodt (KU Leuven) and Professor Dr. Ellen Vlaeyen (KU Leuven/UHasselt), providing access to the academic infrastructure and networks of both institutions. The doctoral researcher will design and conduct studies, analyze and interpret data, publish findings, and share insights with both practice partners and the broader public. Additional responsibilities include contributing to the Network for Leadership Development in Care and supporting teaching activities in the Master of Nursing and Midwifery programme. The position offers an initial one-year contract, with the possibility of extension up to four or six years depending on full-time or part-time engagement. The candidate will benefit from professional development opportunities, including seminars, doctoral training, and participation in national and international conferences. Employment conditions include paid holidays, reimbursement of commuting costs, health and hospitalization insurance, and access to university facilities. Applicants must have a Master’s degree in a relevant field (such as nursing, medicine, healthcare management, social sciences, or related disciplines), an excellent academic record, and strong communication skills in Dutch and English. The selection process involves submitting a motivation letter, CV, academic text, diploma and transcripts, and referee contact details. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, and interviews will include a short presentation. KU Leuven is committed to diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunity.
