Fully Funded PhD in Soil Microbiology and Plant-Microbe Interactions at Oregon State University

The Shadel Lab in the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences at Oregon State University is offering a fully funded PhD position in soil microbiology, with a flexible start date in spring or summer 2026. The research will focus on plant-microbe interactions that control soil carbon dynamics, a key process for ecosystem functioning and climate change mitigation. The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary team and gain hands-on experience in isotope labeling, DNA stable isotope probing, bioinformatics, experimental design, microbial ecology, and soil carbon cycling. Applicants should have a BS in soil science, microbiology, or a related field, be goal-oriented, able to work independently, and have strong communication skills. Preferred candidates will have research experience in a related field, experience with bioinformatics and statistics, and proficiency in R or Python. The position is fully funded through a Graduate Research Assistantship, which covers tuition but requires students to pay fees and a portion of health insurance. International applicants must demonstrate English proficiency. To apply, email Dr. Marie Schaedel with your CV and a brief statement of motivation. After securing an advisor and funding, submit a formal application to the Office of Graduate Education. The priority deadline for spring 2026 is December 1, 2025.
