Factors affecting boat speed in elite rowing

An exciting fully funded PhD opportunity is available at the University of Western Australia (UWA) in partnership with the Western Australian Institute of Sport (WAIS). The project focuses on uncovering the factors that affect boat speed in elite rowing, combining biomechanics and advanced data analytics. The research will involve integrating in-boat sensor data (acceleration, force) with mathematical modelling, including Functional Data Analysis and time-series analysis, to quantify the relationships between technique, force production, propulsion, and speed. The influence of environmental conditions such as wind, current, and water temperature on performance will also be examined. The ideal candidate will have a background in sports science, computer science, mathematics, or engineering, with research experience at honours or master's level. Skills in biomechanics, statistics, data science, programming, and time-series modelling are highly desirable. The position is open to both domestic and international applicants and offers a generous stipend (AUD $44,000–48,000 p.a.), top-up scholarships, and a full tuition fee waiver.
