The University of Turku's Faculty of Technology, Department of Computing, is offering a four-year, fully funded doctoral researcher position in the field of medical artificial intelligence. This opportunity is embedded within a highly interdisciplinary and internationally connected research environment, affiliated with the European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS) Institute Finland. The successful candidate will join a research group led by ELLIS Principal Investigator, Associate Professor Kimmo Kartasalo, and contribute to advancing precision medicine and medical AI for improved diagnostics and treatment of cancer and other diseases with significant societal impact.
The position involves designing, developing, and implementing novel computational approaches for robust, explainable, and fair medical AI. The doctoral researcher will collaborate closely with group members and national and international academic and industry partners, present research results at scientific conferences and workshops, and contribute to the supervision of MSc and BSc students. The role also includes participation in training opportunities covering grant writing, scientific publishing, intellectual property, entrepreneurship, and other activities supporting career development.
Applicants must hold an MSc degree in data science, machine learning, AI, or related fields, with strong academic performance. Required qualifications include theoretical expertise and practical experience in ML/AI, strong programming and software development skills, and familiarity with relevant software frameworks. Experience in medical applications, explainable and fair ML, cloud/HPC computing, and ML deployment in large-scale production environments are considered merits. Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, collaborative research experience, and proficiency in English are essential. International experience is an advantage. Eligibility criteria are defined in the University of Turku Rules of Procedure, and candidates must have or obtain the right to pursue a doctoral degree at the university. In exceptional cases, candidates who have nearly completed a master's degree may be considered for a Research Assistant role.
The position offers a competitive salary, with doctoral/project researcher salaries averaging 2600–2700 euros/month and Research Assistant salaries averaging 2400 euros/month, depending on qualifications and experience. A six-month trial period applies.
