PhD Scholarships in Economics at Copenhagen Business School
The Department of Economics at Copenhagen Business School (CBS) is inviting applications for several fully funded PhD scholarships in Economics, with an expected start date of September 1, 2026. The department is internationally recognized for its research and teaching in core areas of economics, including microeconomics, macroeconomics, and quantitative methods. Research at the department covers a wide range of topics such as behavior, incentives, economic design, labor markets, AI and machine learning in economics, energy and environmental economics, firm behavior, innovation, globalization, migration, urbanization, growth, unemployment, inflation, data science, and welfare economics.
PhD students will have the opportunity to work within CBS’s vibrant research environment, participate in international conferences, and spend time at another research institution as a visiting PhD student. The program is highly international and offers strong career prospects in academia, government, and business. The department hosts research centers such as the Copenhagen School of Energy Infrastructure (CSEI) and the Pension Research Centre (PeRCent), and is involved in projects funded by Danish and EU research councils, private foundations, and companies.
Applicants must have a strong academic background, with a master’s degree (or equivalent) and high grades, specifically a grade of 10 (or equivalent) for the master’s thesis and a weighted GPA of at least 8.2 (Danish 7-point scale) for bachelor’s and master’s combined, or 9.5 for master’s alone. If the GPA requirement is not met, documentation of being in the top 40% of the class is accepted. Proficiency in academic English is required. For the 4+4 scheme, a bachelor’s degree and 60 ECTS in a relevant master’s program are required, with a minimum GPA of 8.2 and at least grade 10 for the bachelor thesis. The application must include a five-page project description, cover letter, diplomas, transcripts, CV, list of publications (if any), and a sample written work.
The PhD scholarships are fully salaried positions, with a monthly salary ranging from DKK 29,691.75 to DKK 36,180 depending on seniority, plus a pension contribution of 18.07%. The scholarship covers tuition fees, office space, course and travel costs. Employment and salary are in accordance with the Danish national collective agreement. PhD students are expected to teach for 416 work hours during the three-year program.
