PhD Studentship - Genetic Load, Fitness and Conservation in the Seychelles Warbler

This PhD project at the University of East Anglia focuses on understanding how genetic variation and mutation-effect scores influence fitness and population viability in endangered bird populations, specifically the Seychelles warbler (Acrocephalus sechellensis) on Cousin Island. The research leverages a unique long-term dataset comprising survival and reproductive success records, alongside whole-genome sequences from 1922 individuals, including samples from populations established via translocation. The project aims to address key gaps in evolutionary ecology and conservation by testing how mutation-effect scores relate to individual fitness, quantifying drift load in both original and translocated populations, and using Population Viability Analyses to inform conservation strategies such as assisted gene flow. Methodologies include optional fieldwork for sample collection, molecular work for genome sequencing, and bioinformatics for defining mutation-effect scores, resulting in a powerful integrated database. The successful candidate will join a vibrant research community at UEA, supported by the ARIES cohort and international collaborators in the Netherlands and Seychelles. Training will be provided in fieldwork, sequencing, bioinformatics, data analysis, scientific writing, and public communication, with additional opportunities to develop transferable skills for future employability. Applicants should have a strong background in evolutionary or conservation genetics/genomics, with experience in bioinformatics or coding preferred. Fieldwork skills are optional. Entry requirements include at least a UK equivalent Bachelors (Honours) 2:1 degree in Biology, Ecology, or a related discipline, with data handling training, and an English language qualification (IELTS 6.5 overall, minimum 6 in each category). Funding is available through a fully-funded ARIES studentship for eligible candidates, covering tuition fees, a maintenance stipend (£20,780 p.a. for 2025/26), and a research training and support grant. International applicants may have the difference between 'home' and 'international' fees waived, but should note that relocation, visa, and health surcharge costs are not covered. The start date for the position is 1st October 2026. Interested candidates should apply via the University of East Anglia's postgraduate application portal, ensuring they meet all eligibility criteria and prepare the necessary documentation.
