Funded PhD Studentship in Health Economics at University of York (Centre for Health Economics)

[Full academic fees (UK or international rates) for 2026/27 entry plus maintenance stipend for 3 years at UKRI rates (£20,780 for 2025/26).] The Centre for Health Economics (CHE) at the University of York invites applications for a funded PhD studentship, offering an outstanding opportunity to join one of the world’s leading health economics research centres. The studentship is open to exceptional candidates interested in advancing research that influences health policy decisions and contributes to the improvement of healthcare systems. CHE will fund a studentship in one of seven prioritised topic areas, including socioeconomic inequalities in unmet needs for mental healthcare, leveraging routine data and decision models for rapid evidence-based decision making, preventive care and mental health service use, machine learning for causal inference in health policy, digital health technologies in NHS service delivery, lifecycle medicines value, and in-silico trials in health technology assessment and policy. Proposals in other health economics areas may also be considered, but priority will be given to the listed topics. Successful candidates will be supervised by leading researchers in the field, including experts such as Vijay Gc, Laura Bojke, Mike Doyle, Sebastian Hinde, Shainur Premji, Maria Ana Matias, Adrián Villaseñor, Rowena Jacobs, Dr Julia Hatamyar, Professor Andrea Manca, Adriana Castelli, Anastasia Arabadzhyan, Beth Woods, Jessica Ochalek, Marta Soares, and Dina Jankovic. The research environment at CHE is vibrant and internationally recognised, attracting top students and visitors from around the globe. The centre is committed to high-quality research and has received the Athena SWAN Silver award for its dedication to equality and good practice in recruitment and career support. The studentship covers full academic fees at UK or international rates for the 2026/27 entry, plus a maintenance stipend for three years at UKRI rates (£20,780 for 2025/26). Students are expected to register full-time and will be part of the Department of Economics and Related Studies at the University of York, a university renowned for its research excellence and teaching quality. Applicants should possess a strong academic background in economics, health economics, public health, statistics, or a related discipline. A relevant master’s degree is desirable but not essential. Quantitative skills, research aptitude, and a keen interest in health economics are important. International applicants must meet the University’s English language requirements. The application deadline is 30th January 2026 (16:00 UTC). Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview, where they will present their proposed project, including relevant literature, data sources, and methods, and discuss their plans and skills for doctoral research. For further details and to apply, visit the official CHE studentship webpage. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to impactful research in health economics within a supportive and inclusive academic environment.
