Fully Funded PhD Position in Informatics: Simulation and AI for Production Optimization
The University of Skövde is offering a fully funded PhD student position in Informatics, with a research focus on simulation and artificial intelligence for production optimization. This opportunity is based in the Department of Engineering Science and is designed for candidates passionate about advancing intelligent, adaptive, and sustainable manufacturing systems. The doctoral project centers on leveraging digital twins, simulation-based multi-objective optimization, and AI-driven decision support systems to help manufacturing industries maintain stable production, optimize energy usage, and recover efficiently from disruptions.
As a doctoral student, you will engage in cutting-edge research involving reinforcement learning, predictive modeling, and real-time adaptive control. The aim is to dynamically optimize production sequencing, resource allocation, and energy-efficient scheduling. The research group is highly collaborative, with strong ties to industry, society, and academia, ensuring that your work will have significant practical and theoretical impact.
Applicants should have an advanced degree or equivalent (at least 240 ECTS credits, with 60 at the advanced level), including a thesis of at least 15 ECTS in Informatics or closely related fields such as computer science, information technology, industrial engineering, production engineering, or automation technology. English language proficiency equivalent to Swedish upper secondary course English 6 is required (IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 90, PTE 62, or equivalent). The selection process will also consider your experience in manufacturing systems modeling, simulation (DES), digital twins, machine learning, reinforcement learning, AI-based optimization, multi-objective optimization, predictive modeling, programming (Python, C++, or similar), industrial collaboration, and your ability to work independently and plan research.
This is a fully funded position for up to five years, with employment at 100% (80% doctoral studies and 20% departmental service). Salary is paid according to a local agreement for postgraduate students. The application deadline is January 25, 2026.
