The Melzer Lab at the Medical University of Vienna is offering a fully funded PhD position focused on understanding how neuropeptides influence brain circuits involved in fear, anxiety, and memory. This role provides hands-on training in advanced neuroscience techniques, including in vivo imaging, electrophysiology, rodent surgeries, and behavioral research.

The position offers a 3-year contract starting in late 2025 or early 2026, with a gross annual salary of approximately €39,000, plus benefits. The selected candidate will also gain international exposure through conferences and collaborative projects within a supportive, interdisciplinary environment.

Funding details

The position is fully funded for 3 years (30 hours/week), with a gross annual salary of approximately €39,000. The funding includes full insurance coverage (health, accident, retirement) and is supported by a WWTF grant. Additional benefits include international exposure and conference participation.

What's required

Applicants must have an MSc in Neuroscience, Biology, or a related discipline, or a 4-year Bachelor’s degree from a university where this qualifies for PhD entry (e.g., USA). Experience with data analysis, basic lab techniques, and animal handling is required. Experience in rodent surgery, behavioral testing, electrophysiological or optical recording techniques, and a FELASA certificate or equivalent are advantageous. Strong English reading and writing skills are necessary.
