About this position
The Chair of Strategic Management and Innovation (SMI) at ETH Zurich invites applications for a PhD position focused on the organizational and strategic implications of advanced AI technologies. This SNSF-funded research project investigates how AI reshapes strategy-making, organizational design, and adaptation in contemporary organizations. The SMI Chair offers a vibrant, international, and team-based research environment, with a strong publication record in leading management journals.
The successful candidate will conduct theory-driven, publication-oriented research, studying AI as an organizational phenomenon rather than a technical development. Empirical work will involve field research in collaboration with company partners, including regular engagement with organizational actors and processes. The position is ideal for those considering an academic career, but applicants with other long-term goals are welcome if motivated to pursue rigorous research and publication in top-tier journals.
Supervision will be provided by Prof. Dr. Georg von Krogh and Dr. Ann-Kristin Weiser, with access to ETH Zurich’s research infrastructure and the broader AI research environment. The PhD dissertation will consist of at least three high-quality papers targeted at leading journals, advancing management and organization research.
Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in a relevant discipline (Management, Strategy, Organization Studies, Information Systems, Sociology, Business Administration, Economics, Computer Science, Engineering, or related fields) and demonstrate outstanding academic performance and research potential. Strong motivation for a publication-oriented PhD, interest in strategy processes and organizational design, analytical and communication skills, and methodological expertise (or willingness to develop it) are required. Professional fluency in English is essential; German proficiency is advantageous due to field research in German-speaking contexts. Prior research assistant experience, empirical research methods, and exposure to management research are considered beneficial.
The position offers competitive salary and employment conditions according to ETH Zurich regulations, access to excellent research infrastructure, and opportunities for collaboration with leading company partners. ETH Zurich values diversity, sustainability, and an inclusive culture, promoting equality of opportunity and a climate-neutral future.
Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled. Required documents include a motivation letter, CV, academic transcripts and diplomas, master thesis (or draft), names and contact details of at least two academic referees, at least one academic reference letter, and a brief indication of English and German proficiency. Applications must be submitted via the ETH Zurich online application portal; email or postal submissions are not accepted.
