About this position
Postdoctoral fellowship in marine ecosystem and climate modelling at Aix-Marseille Université.
This 18-month postdoctoral position is part of the MEDIATION project (PPR-OCEAN, France 2030) and is hosted by the Mediterranean Institute of Oceanography (MIO) in Marseille, France, within Aix-Marseille Université. The project focuses on developing methodological approaches for tailoring model complexity to scientific questions, with a Mediterranean Earth system modelling chain as one of its major demonstrators.
The postdoc will work on the coupling between the lower-trophic-level model Eco3M-MED and the higher-trophic-level model OSMOSE within the MEDNOW chain. The main scientific aim is to move beyond technical coupling and implement feedback processes between the two model components. The candidate will then evaluate the value of bidirectional coupling versus simple forcing by comparing model outputs against in situ data. In the final stage, the work will extend to analysing CMIP6 climate projections for the LTL and HTL compartments of the model.
The MEDNOW modelling chain includes the CNRM-RCSM6B physical model, the ALADIN-climat atmospheric model, the NEMOMED12 ocean circulation model, the LPJmL continental agroecosystem model, the Eco3M-MED biogeochemical/lower-trophic-level model, and the OSMOSE multi-species upper-trophic-level model. The position therefore sits at the interface of oceanography, marine ecology, ecosystem modelling, and climate projection analysis.
Applicants should hold a PhD in oceanography or marine ecology and have substantial experience in 3D modelling, particularly at the interface between physical, biogeochemical, and trophic models. Strong Linux skills, programming ability in compiled languages, and proficiency in Python and/or R are required for model output processing and analysis. The position also values initiative and collaborative skills, as the fellow will interact regularly with researchers at MIO, MARBEC in Montpellier and Sète, and IMBE.
The post is based in Marseille (Luminy campus) with collaboration across partner laboratories. The starting date is as soon as possible on or after 1 December 2026. The salary is based on experience and ranges from €2,616 to €3,062 gross per month. To apply, candidates should send a detailed CV, one or two representative publications, and contact information for two or three references by email to the address provided in the announcement.

What's required
The candidate must hold a PhD in oceanography or marine ecology and have significant experience in 3D modeling, ideally at the interface between physical and LTL biogeochemical models, physical and HTL models, or LTL and HTL models. Familiarity with the Linux environment is required, along with strong programming skills in one or more compiled languages. Good knowledge of Python and/or R for processing and analysing model outputs is also required. The candidate must also show strong initiative and the ability to foster interactions with participants in the MEDIATION project. English proficiency at a good level is expected.
How to apply
