About this position
Two PhD positions are open in an interdisciplinary project on health disparities among migration-related populations in Switzerland. The project combines migration studies and public health to examine mental and physical health outcomes, access barriers, discrimination, social determinants of health, and policy contexts.
The positions are hosted by the Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Prevention Institute at the University of Zurich, in collaboration with the University of Neuchâtel and the UZH Population Research Center. One PhD researcher will mainly work in Neuchâtel under the supervision of Didier Ruedin; the other will mainly work in Zürich under the supervision of Oliver Hämmig. Both students will be enrolled in the PhD program in Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the University of Zurich throughout the doctorate.
Research tasks include developing and piloting questionnaires and survey instruments, collaborating with public health and migration stakeholders, conducting qualitative interviews and focus groups, supporting data management and cleaning, developing independent research questions, analyzing data, writing scientific publications, and presenting findings at conferences.
Applicants should have a Master’s degree in a relevant discipline and a strong interest in public health, epidemiology, social inequalities, and quantitative research. For the Neuchâtel-based position, suitable backgrounds include Quantitative Migration Studies, Sociology, Political Science, or Public Health with a focus on social inequalities. For the Zürich-based position, suitable backgrounds include Public Health, Epidemiology, Health Sociology/Psychology, or other social sciences with a strong quantitative focus. Excellent English and very good German or French (or Italian) are required; knowledge of Dari, Pashto, Tigrinya, Tamil, Albanian, Ukrainian/Russian, or Turkish is an advantage.
The positions are 80% appointments, temporary, and funded by the SNSF project for 4 years. The start date is February 2027 or upon agreement.
To apply, submit your application via the Life Science Zurich Graduate School and select Epidemiology and Biostatistics as your primary program. Applications will be screened for all open positions in that PhD program.
