About this position
ETH Zurich’s Experimental Petrology Group in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences is inviting applications for two PhD positions in petrology and geochemistry, with a focus on alkaline magmatism and carbonatites. The project explores magmatic processes such as partial melting, fractional crystallization, fluid saturation, and fluid compositions, as well as the mineralization associated with these systems.
The positions are primarily experimental and will use high-pressure apparatus ranging from piston cylinders to externally heated pressure vessels, with a strong analytical component that may include isotopes. Depending on the candidate’s background and interests, there may also be a field component or a substantial data compilation and analysis element.
Ideal candidates should have either experimental or analytical experience, plus a strong interest in applying quantitative petrological methods to experimental and natural magmatic processes. The successful applicants will join a group of about twelve PhD students and postdocs working on magmatic petrology and geochemistry.
The positions are available immediately and are expected to be filled by fall 2026. Funding includes an annual PhD salary of approximately 53,500 CHF. At ETH, the PhD is expected to be completed within 4 years, and the successful candidates will have laboratory and/or teaching duties of about 10%.
To apply, prepare a single PDF including a statement of research interests and send it to Max W. Schmidt at [email protected].
