About this position

Cornell Atkinson Center for Sustainability is inviting applications for its 2027 Postdoctoral Fellowship in Sustainability. This is a research-focused postdoctoral opportunity at Cornell University for early-career scholars whose work addresses pressing sustainability challenges and connects rigorous academic research with real-world impact.

Fellows work with one Cornell faculty mentor and one external partner organization (governmental, non-governmental, or private sector; not another university). The fellowship emphasizes transdisciplinary research, co-creation with partners, and impact across Cornell’s sustainability mission. Fellows also join the Sustainability Leadership Program, with professional development in science communication, strategic career planning, and collaborative leadership.

Funding: The fellowship provides a salary of $65,000 per year, full Cornell employee benefits, and $12,000 per year for research and travel expenses. The appointment is for three years, with continuation in years 2 and 3 contingent on satisfactory progress and funding availability.

Eligibility highlights: Applicants must have a PhD in a field relevant to the proposed research by the start date, and the PhD must have been awarded no earlier than May 1, 2025 for this cycle. The program is not open to current Cornell postdocs or Cornell PhD graduates. Fellows must maintain primary residency in Ithaca, New York, and the appointment is US-based for employment purposes. Four letters of recommendation are required.

Deadline: Applications and letters of recommendation are due by October 20, 2026 at 5:00 p.m. ET. The fellowship is expected to start between June 1 and September 1, 2027.

How to apply: Submit the online application form and upload the required materials: project abstract, applicant background, proposal, impact statement, and CV. Ask recommenders to email letters directly to [email protected].

Research areas: sustainability, environmental science, policy impact, science communication, collaborative leadership, and transdisciplinary research.
