About this position

Université Laval’s Sustainable Plant Protection Laboratory (EdeLab) is advertising 3 PhD positions in sustainable plant protection. The projects sit at the intersection of plant biology, plant pathology, entomology, genomics, microbiome, and bioinformatics, within a multidisciplinary, bilingual, and diversity-driven team of 20+ members from 12 countries.

Project 1: Evolution of ankyrin-repeat effectors in gall-forming plasmodiophorids. This project investigates effector expansion, repeat biology, and genomics in Plasmodiophora brassicae and Spongospora subterranea using yeast heterologous systems.

Project 2: Microbiome-mediated insect adaptation to extreme environments. This project studies how microbial symbionts help insects adapt to Arctic/Subarctic conditions and respond to climate change, in collaboration with northern communities (Nunavik Sentinels).

Project 3: Leafhopper effectors at the plant–insect interface. This project focuses on salivary effectors involved in plant immunity manipulation across leafhopper lineages, building on new reference genomes and comparative genomics.

Eligibility: Applicants should be eligible for the PhD program in Plant Biology at Université Laval and normally hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in plant pathology, entomology, microbiology, genomics, bioinformatics, or a related field. Strong English is required; French is a strong asset.

Application: Email the application package to [email protected] by September 15th. Use the exact subject line matching your preferred project. Include a complete academic CV and a motivation letter (max 2 pages). Do not include personal information such as age, marital status, or photo.
