About this position

This Bicentenary PhD Scholarship at The University of Manchester offers an exciting opportunity to advance the field of actinide-element multiple bonding, a cutting-edge area in inorganic and synthetic chemistry. The project aims to extend the range of actinide-ligand multiple bonds, particularly targeting high-value actinide-group 14/15 multiple bonds, and to rigorously probe these bonds using advanced characterization techniques such as solution and solid-state NMR spectroscopy, crystallography, IR, Raman, UV/Vis/NIR, and EPR spectroscopies, as well as quantum chemical calculations. The research will also focus on developing stoichiometric and catalytic reactivities, including metathesis and group 14/15-element bond formation, to deepen understanding of structure-bonding-reactivity relationships in actinides.

As a PhD researcher, you will gain hands-on experience with Schlenk and glove box techniques, a wide range of spectroscopic and analytical methods, and computational modeling. The project is based in the Department of Chemistry, a vibrant research environment with access to state-of-the-art facilities and a strong commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion.

Applicants should hold or expect to achieve at least a 2.1 honours degree or a master’s (or international equivalent) in a relevant science or engineering discipline. The position is fully funded for four years, covering tuition fees, a UKRI minimum annual stipend (£20,780), and up to £5,000 per annum for research training support. Flexible study arrangements, including part-time options, may be available depending on project and funder requirements.
