About this position

This PhD project at the University of Strathclyde’s Department of Management Science focuses on developing and evaluating a GPT-based AI co-facilitator for Group Model Building (GMB) workshops. GMB is a participatory systems dynamics method where stakeholders collaboratively construct Causal Loop Diagrams (CLDs) to understand complex socio-technical challenges. The project aims to address limitations of traditional GMB, such as reliance on skilled facilitators and limited post-workshop engagement, by integrating generative AI into the facilitation process.

The AI co-facilitator will process real-time workshop discussions using speech-to-text technology, suggest causal links, propose feedback loops, and visualise draft CLDs, while ensuring interpretive authority remains with participants. A post-workshop conversational interface will enable continued model refinement, extending stakeholder engagement beyond the session. The project also evaluates the effectiveness of AI-generated plain-language narratives from CLDs, making complex systems insights more accessible to policymakers and public audiences.

Research will involve 4–6 comparative workshops (traditional vs AI-integrated) with participants from domains such as healthcare and urban planning. The mixed-methods, socio-technical design will assess impacts on modelling accuracy, inclusivity, participant experience, and accessibility of systems thinking for non-expert audiences. Findings will be synthesised into an open-source, replicable framework for ethical human–AI co-facilitation in participatory modelling.

Funding is available for UK students, covering all university tuition fees and an annual tax-free stipend at the UKRI rate for three years. International students are eligible to apply but must secure funding for the difference between home and international tuition fees; exceptional candidates may be provided funding for this difference. Applicants should have a strong academic background in computer science, management science, systems engineering, or related fields, and demonstrate interest in AI, participatory modelling, and socio-technical systems. Experience with programming, data analysis, or workshop facilitation is desirable. International applicants must meet English language requirements.
