About this position

Ghent University, one of Belgium's leading academic institutions, is offering a PhD position titled 'Assistant Department Sociology' within the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences, Department PS04 - Sociology. This role is designed for candidates who wish to pursue academic research in preparation for a doctoral dissertation, with at least 50% of the assignment dedicated to research on a theme related to one of the department's research groups. The position also involves assisting with teaching for both Dutch- and English-language courses, including 'Kwantitatief onderzoeksdesign' and 'Sociologische benaderingswijzen', as well as co-organizing examinations and supporting internal and external departmental services.

Applicants must hold a Master in Sociology or an equivalent degree, with the requirement fulfilled at the start of the appointment. For diplomas awarded outside the European Union, a certificate of equivalence (NARIC) must be submitted. Candidates should have distinguished themselves in education, possess excellent knowledge of Dutch and English (both written and spoken), and demonstrate strong teaching and communication skills. Experience in teaching, didactic training, and participation in extra training or conferences is recommended. The role requires an interest in academic and/or project-based research and services, and the ability to organize educational activities tailored to diverse student populations.

The appointment is for two years, with the possibility of renewal twice for two years each, contingent on positive evaluations. The maximum term of appointment is six years, in accordance with the Codex of Higher Education. Remuneration is determined by salary scale AAP3, and staff members enjoy a range of benefits including training opportunities, 36 days of paid leave, bicycle commuting reimbursement, ecocheques, and more. The appointment will start on 1 September 2026 at the earliest.

To apply, candidates must submit their application online via the Ghent University e-recruitment system before the deadline of 16 June 2026. Required documents include a CV and overview of study results (merged PDF), cover letter (PDF), transcript of the required degree, and certificate of equivalence if applicable. For foreign diplomas in languages other than Dutch, French, German, or English, a translation must be provided. Applications not submitted online or after the deadline will not be accepted.
