The Research Institute for Electronic Science (RIES) at Hokkaido University is seeking applications for an Assistant Professor position in the Biology and Life Sciences Division, specifically in the research group of Professor Koichi Fujiwara. The group is dedicated to advancing research and education on machine learning with small data for human and process systems, focusing on interdisciplinary approaches that bridge life sciences, engineering, and data science.

Research in the group centers on leveraging small data and human expertise to develop novel medical devices, analyze clinical and biological signals, and create innovative production systems. Key topics include sleep disorder screening, epilepsy prediction and care, medical big data analysis, entertainment applications using biometric technologies, fostering AI talent for medical applications, and soft sensor development for quality control in production processes.

The successful candidate will engage in research and education related to machine learning algorithms, mathematical modeling, biophysics, biosignal processing, control engineering, and electronics, with a strong emphasis on medical and biological data. The position is ideal for those passionate about pioneering new methods and interdisciplinary fields, and who can collaborate effectively with researchers from diverse backgrounds, including clinicians and engineers. Proficiency in Japanese is desirable due to the potential for human subject experiments.

The appointment is for five years, with the possibility of a single three-year renewal after review. Promotion to associate professor is possible based on performance. The annual salary starts from 4,000,000 JPY, with benefits including health insurance, pension, and support for work-life balance. The position is full-time, with standard working hours and holidays as per university regulations.
