About this position

Assistant Professor in Photonics and Quantum Technology at Aalto University

Aalto University School of Electrical Engineering is recruiting an Assistant Professor in Photonics and Quantum Technology for the Department of Electronics and Nanoengineering in Espoo, Finland. The role is part of Aalto’s tenure-track system and is aimed at an ambitious researcher who can lead both research and education in this fast-moving area.

The position sits in a strong research environment connected to the national OtaNano infrastructure, including Micronova (the largest research-dedicated cleanroom facility in the Nordic countries) and the Nanomicroscopy Centre. The post also benefits from collaboration networks such as InstituteQ and access to applied research through VTT. The department’s broader research environment includes photonics, nanotechnology, microwave engineering, electromagnetics, integrated circuit design, and space science and technology.

Research topics of interest include solid-state hybrid quantum devices, integrated quantum photonics, two-dimensional materials, quantum dots, nanophotonics, optical quantum computing, and related emerging photonics areas. The university especially encourages research that combines micro- and nanofabrication of photonic devices and quantum systems to discover new fundamental phenomena and practical applications in quantum, information, or other technologies.

Eligibility highlights include a doctoral degree in quantum technology, physics, or a closely related field; strong research experience; an international publication record; and clear potential to build an independent research group. The appointee should also be motivated and able to teach and supervise MSc and doctoral students. English is the working language, so sufficient proficiency for teaching and academic collaboration is required.

Funding and conditions: the position offers a competitive salary of 5300–6400 € per month depending on qualifications and experience, plus the possibility of research start-up funding. The primary workplace is the Otaniemi Campus in Espoo, Finland.

Application deadline: 12 April 2026 (23:59 Finnish time). Applicants must submit an application letter, CV with ResearcherID or ORCID and references, publication list with five highlighted publications, a research portfolio (max 5 pages), and a teaching statement (2 pages). Shortlisted candidates will later be asked to provide three recommendation letters.

Funding details

Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
