About this position

The Faculty of Archaeology at the University of Warsaw is advertising a postdoctoral/assistant professor position within the project NCN OPUS-30 (LAP) “Return to Abu Mena: Pilgrims, Residents and Everyday Life in a Late Antique City”. The role is based in Warsaw, Poland, and is a full-time temporary appointment.

This opportunity is aimed at researchers with a strong background in archaeology, especially Mediterranean archaeology and, in particular, Egypt. The project focus suggests a strong interest in Late Antique urbanism, Christian Egypt, and archaeological study of pilgrimage, daily life, and settlement activity at Abu Mena.

Applicants must hold a PhD in Archaeology. The doctoral degree must have been awarded no earlier than 1 January 2015, and in most cases must come from an institution other than the University of Warsaw; candidates with a University of Warsaw PhD may still be eligible if they have completed a documented 10-month postdoctoral fellowship abroad in line with NCN regulations. The advert also requires documented archaeological fieldwork experience, competence in archaeological documentation, experience using databases, inventories and catalogues of archaeological finds, and excellent English. Additional strengths include knowledge of Christian Egypt and experience in interdisciplinary research teams.

The position is not described as EU-funded in the posting. The deadline for applications is 31 October 2026. Applications are submitted by email to [email protected] with the reference WA.1220-6/2026. Candidates should send a complete application in one PDF and publications in a second PDF, and two recommendation letters should be sent separately to [email protected].

Required documents include an application letter addressed to the Dean, a personal questionnaire, cover letter with research interests, doctoral degree certificate (or confirmation), PDFs of the five most important publications, two recommendation letters, and a statement confirming acceptance of the competition rules and personal data processing information. The selection process includes formal review, substantive evaluation, interview, and final adjudication.
