About this position
Postdoctoral position at the University of Warsaw, Faculty of Biology in the Institute of Evolutionary Biology, working on an exciting project titled “Long transoceanic dispersals or land bridges? Unravelling biogeographic patterns and the evolutionary success of the lizard superfamily Lacertoidea”.
The successful candidate will join a research team led by Dr Mateusz Tałanda and contribute to a project funded by the National Science Centre. The work focuses on the evolutionary history, phylogenetic relationships, and biogeographic patterns of Lacertoidea, a major lizard superfamily that includes groups such as teiids, amphisbaenians, and lacertids. The project combines modern and fossil evidence, extensive 3D skeletal data, computed tomography, phylogenetic reconstruction, ancestral-state analysis, and biogeographic interpretation.
Key tasks include visits to collections at other institutions, participation in team and lab organization, preparation of photographs and 3D bone models of fossil and extant lizards, phylogenetic and biogeographic analyses, and contributing to publication and conference dissemination. The position is well suited to researchers with a strong background in evolutionary biology, herpetology, osteology, CT-based anatomy, and fossil/modern reptile specimens.
The position is offered as a full-time employment contract starting in February 2027 for 12 months, with the possibility of extension for an additional 24 months subject to positive evaluation. The salary is PLN 11,000–11,300 gross per month, plus additional annual remuneration and a service allowance.
Applicants should hold a PhD in biological sciences or a related field, demonstrate a strong publication record, international research experience, high-level English proficiency, and project-relevant technical skills, especially phylogenetic analyses and 3D anatomical data processing. Experience with CT-scan segmentation, lepidosaur anatomy, student supervision, science outreach, and research funding acquisition is valued. Applications must be submitted by email to the project leader and the Faculty Dean’s Office by 8 November 2026.
