About this position

SRON Space Research Organisation Netherlands is offering a postdoctoral position for an Atmospheric Scientist in Leiden, The Netherlands, focused on satellite-based methane research and atmospheric interpretation. The successful candidate will join SRON’s Earth Science Group, a team of scientists working on satellite data interpretation, data processing, and the development of new instrumentation.

The project centres on reducing methane emissions, one of the priorities of global climate policy. SRON plays a key role in this area as co-Principal Investigator Institute for TROPOMI, a Dutch satellite instrument launched with ESA. The work will use TROPOMI and other satellite datasets, including GHGSat, Sentinel-2, EnMAP, VIIRS, and Sentinel-3, to identify large methane hot spots, quantify emissions, and support mitigation efforts for super-emitters around the world.

Research activities include emission quantification, monitoring of emissions, methodological improvements, and deeper studies using inverse modelling for priority sources such as open-pit coal mines. The project is carried out in close collaboration with the IMEO Methane Alert and Response System (MARS) team at UNEP, giving the work strong international policy relevance and real-world impact.

The team develops methods to detect and identify sources and quantify emissions of trace gases using satellite data alongside atmospheric modelling. The role also includes presenting results to stakeholders and scientific conferences, and publishing in peer-reviewed journals.

Applicants should have a PhD in atmospheric sciences or a related field, with experience interpreting atmospheric observations such as satellite or aircraft measurements using transport models. Strong programming and data analytics skills are expected. Experience with atmospheric methane and flux inversions is an advantage, and excellent English communication skills are required.

This is a full-time position for two years, with the possibility of a two-year extension. The appointment is based in Leiden and is employed through NWO-I. Salary depends on experience and education and will not exceed €5758 gross per month.
