About this position
The British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowships are open for applications for early-career researchers in the humanities and social sciences.
This is a three-year postdoctoral award designed to support an independent research project and the completion of a significant piece of publishable research, while also strengthening research and teaching experience in an academic environment.
The fellowship is funded by the Department for Science, Innovation & Technology (DSIT) and is covered under the Full Economic Costing (FEC) regime. The Academy currently funds 80% of salary costs, directly allocated costs, and indirect costs.
Applicants must be based at an eligible UK university or recognised UK research organisation for the duration of the fellowship. Eligible applicants include British citizens and EEA nationals, anyone with a doctorate from a UK university, or others who can demonstrate strong prior association with the UK academic community. Applicants should be at an early stage of their career, have completed their Viva Voce between 1 April 2024 and 1 April 2027, and must already be of postdoctoral status when the committee meets. Those who have ever held a permanent academic post in higher education are not eligible, subject to limited exemptions.
The scheme opens on 1 July 2026 and the deadline for submissions and UK institutional approval is 30 September 2026 at 17:00 BST. The earliest start date is 1 September 2027, and the fellowship duration is three years.
Applications must be submitted through the British Academy Flexi-Grant portal. Applicants should read the scheme guidance and FAQs carefully, and may contact [email protected] for support or exemption requests.
