About this position

PhD Fellowship in Digital Twin Technology for Heart Valve Interventions

This PhD project focuses on developing and validating patient-specific digital twin tools for planning redo transcatheter aortic valve implantation (redo TAVI) procedures. The fellowship is hosted by FEops NV in Ghent, Belgium, within the CDTnet network and is funded under Horizon Europe / Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions.

The project builds on FEops HEARTguide, which combines medical imaging, artificial intelligence, and computational modelling to predict how a cardiovascular device will interact with an individual patient. The doctoral researcher will work with pre- and post-procedural CT imaging data to develop, validate, and refine computational models that support safer and more effective redo TAVI planning.

Research topics include medical image analysis, reconstruction of patient anatomy and prior valve implants, finite element analysis, and the development of AI-based surrogate models to complement or accelerate existing workflows. The work will also examine how intervention parameters such as valve type, size, and position influence procedural outcomes, with the goal of helping clinicians select the most appropriate intervention strategy for each patient.

The project is strongly interdisciplinary, combining biomedical engineering, computational modelling, artificial intelligence, and clinical cardiology. FEops collaborates with leading cardiovascular centres across Europe, giving the PhD candidate access to unique imaging datasets and real-world clinical cases.

Planned secondments provide additional training and exposure: the University of Zagreb School of Medicine (Croatia) for observation of valve intervention procedures and patient pathway analysis, IDIBAPS in Barcelona (Spain) for clinical exposure to valve disease management, and Ghent University (Belgium) for advanced training in computational fluid dynamics and cardiovascular modelling.

Applicants should hold a Master degree or equivalent in engineering or mathematics and have a strong computational background. Finite element analysis experience is required; Abaqus, Python, medical image analysis, machine learning, and neural networks are beneficial. MSCA mobility and doctoral eligibility rules apply, including a 12-month residency/work rule for Belgium and no prior doctoral degree. Excellent English is required.

Scientific programming skills such as Python are desirable, and experience with medical image analysis, machine learning techniques, and neural networks is advantageous. Applicants must meet MSCA eligibility requirements: they must not have lived or worked in Belgium for more than 12 months in the 3 years before recruitment, must have no prior doctoral degree, and must be eligible to enrol in the PhD programme at Ghent University. Excellent English is required.
