About this position

Clinical Generative AI postdoctoral position at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland, focused on clinically relevant NLP, large language models, and conversational AI.

The postdoctoral fellow will join a collaborative research program on clinical AI and work with clinicians, clinical researchers, informaticians, and health-system leaders on applied projects using real-world patient and clinical data. The role emphasizes building, evaluating, and implementing AI tools for real clinical and research use, with a strong focus on safety, reliability, bias, usability, and effectiveness rather than benchmark performance alone.

Example research directions include patient-facing conversational agents, pre-visit history collection, preventive screening discussions, clinical documentation support, triage workflows, AI scribe evaluation, EHR-based NLP, and methods for evaluating LLM outputs in medicine. The position also offers flexibility for the fellow to develop self-initiated projects and a distinct scholarly agenda in clinical AI, LLM evaluation, patient-facing AI, or human–AI interaction in medicine.

Eligibility: applicants should have a background in Computer Science, NLP, LLMs, or conversational AI. Interest in clinical AI, healthcare workflows, and applied research with patient data is important.

Appointment: 12 months with an option to renew. Start date is May 15, 2026 or after, with the team aiming to fill the position by July 1, 2026. Hybrid work arrangement may be possible.

Contacts: Dr. Katherine Goodman ([email protected]) and Dr. Daniel Morgan ([email protected]).
