This interdisciplinary PhD project, titled 'Credibility Without Disclosure: Secrecy and Linguistic Strategy in UK Espionage and Covert Action Accusations,' is based at Aston University within both the Department for Society and Politics and the Aston Institute for Forensic Linguistics. The research investigates how UK authorities construct and sustain credible public accusations of espionage, sabotage, and covert action under conditions of official secrecy, where evidential disclosure is restricted. High-profile cases such as the Litvinenko and Skripal poisonings and allegations of Chinese espionage in Parliament highlight the political and diplomatic stakes involved when evidence remains classified.

The project sits at the intersection of security and intelligence studies and forensic linguistics, offering a comparative, multi-case research design focused on UK-based cases from the post–Cold War period to the present. The successful candidate will select specific cases to analyze, examining how accusations are made, received, and scrutinized by Parliament and the media, and how officials respond to questioning and denials. Methodologically, the research combines corpus-assisted critical discourse analysis with elite interviews, building a structured corpus from government press releases, speeches, parliamentary debates, official reports, and media coverage. This enables both quantitative and qualitative analysis of how credibility is constructed through language, including evidential claims, certainty, hedging, appeals to authority, and narrative framing. Interviews with former ministers and officials will provide insider perspectives on disclosure decisions and the impact of secrecy constraints.

The project aims to contribute to academic debates on secrecy, attribution, and political communication by developing a grounded account of 'credibility without disclosure.' It also offers practical insights for policymakers and media professionals on how national security claims are communicated and contested in democratic societies.

Applicants must hold, or expect to achieve, a First or Upper Second Class Honours undergraduate degree and a Masters degree with Merit or Distinction in relevant subjects. Essential skills include experience with critical discourse analysis and corpus-assisted discourse analysis, and understanding of research on secret intelligence, covert action, and government communication. Desirable skills include familiarity with forensic linguistics, experience with qualitative and quantitative research approaches, and engagement with research on government communication. This position is fully funded, covering all tuition fees and providing an annual stipend.
