About this position
The University of Oldenburg invites applications for a 36-month doctoral candidate (PhD) position in experimental marine ecology at the Institute for Chemistry and Biology of the Marine Environment (ICBM) in Wilhelmshaven, Germany. The position is part of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Doctoral Network ReDiLEEP, which focuses on response diversity and how it contributes to ecosystem resilience, biodiversity conservation, and ecosystem management.
The successful candidate will join the Plankton Ecology Lab and work on DC3, a project that investigates response diversity in marine pelagic ecosystems. The research examines how plankton communities respond to environmental change, with emphasis on thermal reaction norms, warming, marine heatwaves, metacommunity dynamics, adaptation, and spatial connectivity. The project is strongly experimental and includes bioassays, long-term microcosm studies, heatwave treatments, and metacommunity experiments, as well as planned secondments to Trinity College Dublin and the University of Zürich.
Research activities include designing, preparing, conducting, and analysing experiments; publishing scientific papers; contributing to conferences and workshops; participating in ReDiLEEP training and dissemination; and engaging actively in the lab and doctoral network cohort. The position also includes creating a Personal Career Development Plan and participating in biannual supervisory meetings.
Funding is provided through the EU Horizon Europe / MSCA Doctoral Networks framework, with a gross salary corresponding to 100% TVL E13. The post is full-time and based in Wilhelmshaven, with a planned start between 1 January 2027 and 1 March 2027, subject to MSCA eligibility verification and doctoral enrolment.
Applicants should have a Master of Science or equivalent in Ecology, Marine or Aquatic Environmental Science, Biology, or a related field. Additional desirable experience includes wet lab methods, phytoplankton cultivation, microscopy, statistics in R, scientific communication, and publication experience. Applicants must satisfy MSCA mobility rules and must not already hold a doctoral degree.
