About this position

Ghent University invites applications for a full-time Doctoral Fellow position in the field of biosensor development for radiation-induced inflammation in prostate cancer. This prestigious FWO-funded PhD opportunity is hosted within the Centre for Microsystems Technology (CMST, imec-associated) and the Electrochemistry and Surface Analysis (ESA) group, both at Ghent University. The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary team focused on implementing emerging nanodevices as biosensors to detect and monitor multiple biomarkers associated with radiation-induced inflammation, particularly in the context of prostate cancer treatment.

The research will involve the development and validation of new electrochemical sensors for the detection of inflammatory biomarkers related to radiation toxicity. The PhD student will be responsible for designing and executing biosensing experiments, analyzing results, and reporting findings through written reports and oral presentations. The project offers access to state-of-the-art cleanroom facilities and advanced characterization tools, as well as continuous interaction with a collaborative research team.

Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in (Bio)Engineering or Chemical/Biochemical/Biomedical/Sciences. Candidates completing their Master’s by June/July 2026 are also eligible. Essential qualifications include practical experience with electrochemistry, sample preparation, and measurement set-ups, as well as fluency in English and strong communication skills. Additional assets are coding skills (Matlab) and experience with scientific writing. The selection process will consider the ranking of the institutions where previous degrees were obtained. The position requires motivation, curiosity, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively. Willingness to write proposals for national funding is expected.

The fellowship offers an initial 12-month contract, extendable up to 48 months upon positive evaluation. The salary is 100% of the net salary of an AAP member, determined by family status and seniority, and is tax-free. Staff benefits include extensive training opportunities, 36 days of annual leave, bicycle allowance, eco vouchers, and a supportive work environment. The anticipated start date is between June 1st and September 1st, 2026.

To apply, send your motivation letter, CV, copies of degrees, grade transcripts, English certificate, and contact details of two referees in PDF format by email to Prof. Ioulia Tzouvadaki and Prof. Mieke Adriaens ([email protected] and [email protected]), with the subject line 'PhD position: FWO'. The application deadline is May 1st, 2026. Late applications will not be considered. Ghent University is committed to equal opportunities and diversity, and encourages all qualified candidates to apply.
