About this position

Ghent University is offering a full-time doctoral fellow position in the Department of Information Technology within the WAVES research group, in collaboration with IMEC in Belgium.

The topic is Digital Twin Mapping of 5G-6G dynamic electromagnetic field environments. The project sits at the intersection of wireless communications, electromagnetic field monitoring, spectrum analysis, and digital twin modeling. The research is motivated by the need to monitor legacy and next-generation wireless networks for radiation risk communication, RF exposure assessment, frequency and radio resource management, and network adaptability. It also addresses the integration of terrestrial networks with non-terrestrial networks, including drones and Low Earth Orbit satellites, and the emerging FR3 frequency range from 7 GHz to 24 GHz.

Possible research directions include the design of modular monitoring nodes and their integration into a Radio Electric Observatory testbed, experimental assessment of EM fields across relevant spectrum bands, creation and analysis of EM and spectrum maps, detection of unusual traffic patterns, human EM absorption assessment using FDTD methods, detection and localization of dynamic users through wireless signal parameters and sensor fusion, and development of a digital twin city model that replicates realistic wireless propagation and exposure using open-source tools and existing WAVES platforms.

The successful candidate will join a young, dynamic team and work on research activities in national and international projects. The position is a doctoral fellow appointment with an initial duration of 12 months, renewable after positive evaluation up to a maximum of 48 months. The fellowship is stated as 100% of the net salary of an AAP member in equal family circumstances, and it is described as tax-free when the fellowship conditions are met.

Applicants should have a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics Engineering, Computer Sciences, or a related Master of Science degree. Interest or experience in wireless networks, electromagnetic measurements, signal processing, modeling, or digital twin methods would fit the project well.

Funding details
