About this position
Ghent University, a top 100 global institution, is offering a full-time doctoral fellowship in the Department of Electromechanical, Systems and Metal Engineering. The position is based at the Energy & Systems Laboratory (EnSy) and is part of the regional Stratus project, which aims to develop high-performance drone motors without the use of critical materials such as rare-earth magnets and copper. The research will focus on alternative solutions, including electrically excited systems and ferrite-supported designs, with aluminum windings replacing copper.
As a PhD student, you will contribute to the development of multiphysics models (electromagnetic and thermal) for electric motors, assess manufacturability for mass production, and participate in experimental work including prototype construction and motor testing. The project is conducted in collaboration with several industrial partners, emphasizing both design and manufacturing aspects as well as drone applications.
The ideal candidate holds a Master of Science in engineering (technology), preferably in electromechanical or electrical engineering, and possesses strong technical knowledge and hands-on experience in electric machines. Affinity with experimental research and simulation software is essential, and additional expertise in power electronics and motor control is advantageous. Good English communication skills and a passion for academic research in a multidisciplinary, international context are required.
The fellowship is initially for 12 months, extendable up to 48 months after positive evaluation. The salary is equivalent to that of an AAP member, determined by family status and seniority, and is tax-free. Ghent University offers extensive staff benefits, including training opportunities, generous holiday leave, bicycle allowance, and eco vouchers. The research will be conducted at the Electrical Energy Laboratory in the Tech Lane Ghent Science Park, Zwijnaarde.
Applications should be sent by email to [email protected] and [email protected], including a cover letter and CV. Reference letters are not required at this stage. The application deadline is September 30, 2026. Suitable candidates will be invited for an interview and may be given a small assignment. Flexible starting dates are available, with preference for early commencement. For further information about the PhD topic, contact [email protected].
