About this position

Ghent University, one of Belgium’s leading research institutions, invites applications for a full-time doctoral fellowship in the Department of Human Structure and Repair, in collaboration with Orsi Academy—a renowned international center for surgical innovation and expertise in minimally invasive surgery. This position is based in Melle, Belgium, and offers a unique opportunity to join a multidisciplinary team at the forefront of robot-assisted surgery and telesurgery training.

The research project centers on developing and validating objective performance metrics for proficiency-based training in robotic surgery and telesurgery. The candidate will systematically deconstruct surgical procedures into phases, key steps, critical errors, and performance metrics using international expert consensus and validation methods. These metrics will be quantified from video analysis, simulator data, and telesurgical platforms, then translated into training models and curricula to enable objective, proficiency-based progression and standardized skill acquisition. The project aims to establish reliable benchmarks for skill assessment and training progression, with applications in real-time feedback systems and remote surgical environments. Later stages may involve computer vision models for automated performance assessment and feedback, contributing to scalable, data-driven training programs that enhance surgical performance, standardization, and patient safety.

Responsibilities include drafting study protocols, submitting ethical committee requests, developing performance metrics and assessment frameworks, designing and conducting validation studies, collecting and analyzing surgical performance data, translating metrics into training models, supporting integration into curricula, collaborating with clinical and technical partners, contributing to computer vision model development, and reporting research results at conferences and in peer-reviewed journals.

Applicants must hold or expect to hold a medical degree (MD or equivalent) by September 2026. A strong interest in robot-assisted surgery, surgical innovation, training, and education is essential. Enrollment in a general surgery residency is an asset but not required. Candidates should possess analytical skills, experience or willingness to develop research methodologies and data analysis, excellent English proficiency, academic writing and presentation skills, self-learning ability, creativity, and comfort working in an international, dynamic team. Occasional international travel and flexible hours may be required.

The fellowship offers a full-time contract for up to 48 months, starting as early as September 1, 2026. The salary is 100% of the net AAP member rate, determined by family status and seniority, and is tax-free. Ghent University provides extensive staff benefits, including training opportunities, 36 days of holiday leave, bicycle allowance, and eco vouchers.

To apply, submit your CV, diploma (if available), motivation letter, and PDF of your Master’s Thesis to [email protected] by June 30, 2026. Late applications will not be considered. For further information, contact Prof. Niki Rashidian at [email protected]. Applications can also be submitted via the provided application link.

Ghent University is committed to equal opportunities and diversity, encouraging all qualified candidates to apply.
