About this position
Doctoral Position in Neutral-Atom Quantum Computing at ETH Zurich (Department of Physics, D-PHYS), based in Zurich, Switzerland.
The newly established Atom Quantum Processing (AQP) group, led by Prof. Konrad Viebahn, is recruiting a highly motivated PhD candidate to help build a new experimental platform for ultracold neutral atoms and quantum computing. The project focuses on laser cooling, trapping, and imaging of rubidium-85 atoms in optical lattices, with an emphasis on highly coherent collisional interactions for quantum information processing.
Research themes include neutral-atom quantum architectures, AMO physics, quantum optics, quantum simulation, quantum sensing, metrology, and the development of scalable quantum machines. The project also involves setting up the experimental apparatus, building the laboratory infrastructure, integrating control hardware (ARTIQ), and exploring novel schemes through theoretical calculations and numerical simulations.
Applicants should hold, or be close to completing, an MSc in physics, quantum engineering, electrical engineering, or a closely related field. Strong motivation to build a quantum computer from scratch, excellent English, and readiness to work in an international team are required. Helpful experience includes optics, spectroscopy, laser locking, optical resonators/interferometers, CAD, soldering, PCB/FPGA development, and digital signal processing.
The position is fixed-term and starts around 1 October 2026 or by mutual agreement. Applications are reviewed immediately until the position is filled.
To apply, submit a single PDF via ETH Zurich's online portal with a cover letter, CV, academic transcripts, and two referees' contact details. Questions should be sent to [email protected]; applications by email are not accepted.
