About this position
Doctoral Position in Risk-Based Inspection and Maintenance Planning of Tunnels at ETH Zurich
This PhD opening is hosted by the Chair of Infrastructure Management led by Professor Dr. Bryan T. Adey at the Institute of Construction and Infrastructure Management, Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering, ETH Zurich. The project is part of the SNSF-funded interdisciplinary initiative PRISM-T and focuses on risk-based inspection and maintenance planning for tunnels.
The research topic combines civil engineering, probabilistic modelling, Bayesian networks, Value of Information analysis, decision analysis, and mathematical optimisation. The doctoral researcher will map and formalise tunnel maintenance decision processes, develop incremental risk updating methods, build computationally tractable VoI approaches, and formulate optimisation models for intervention programs under realistic tunnel constraints.
The project has a strong applied component. Regular field work is expected at the Hagerbach Test Gallery in Flums and the EuroTube Foundation in Dübendorf, with close collaboration with partners in Bolzano. Validation campaigns and work in underground environments are part of the role.
Eligibility highlights: a Master’s degree in civil engineering, operations research, industrial engineering, applied mathematics, or a related field; strong skills in probabilistic modelling, reliability and risk analysis, and optimisation; very good programming ability, preferably in Python; and good English. German is an advantage.
Funding: the position is a doctoral opening within an SNSF-funded project. No specific stipend amount is stated in the post.
Application deadline: 9 November 2026. Applications are accepted only via the ETH Zurich online portal and should include a letter of interest, CV, referee contacts, and academic transcripts/diplomas.
